Why Dublin gutters block
A Dublin gutter fills with three things: leaves from the trees along the road, moss the wind strips off the north side of the roof, and grit from concrete tiles as their surface wears. Moss and grit are the problem on the 1960s to 1980s estates in Raheny, Clondalkin, Lucan and Swords, where the tiles are now 40 to 60 years old and shedding. Once a gutter is half full it stops draining, water tips over the front edge in every downpour and runs down the wall. That is how you get damp in a bedroom corner, rotten fascia boards and a wet foundation.
What the job involves
We clear every gutter by hand, bag the waste and flush each downpipe from the top so we know it runs clear to the gully. At eaves height we also check the joints, brackets and fall, because a clean gutter sloping the wrong way will still overflow, and we look across the roof, ridge and chimney, so a slipped tile or cracked ridge mortar is flagged now rather than after the next storm. Everything is photographed before and after and sent to your phone.
What affects the price
The price depends on the house and is confirmed after a free look:
- House size: a mid-terrace has a front and a back run; a detached house has gutters on every side and more downpipes.
- Height and access: a two-storey house is done from ladders; a three-storey house or a run over a conservatory needs a platform.
- How full they are: gutters cleared every year are quick; a decade of moss and grit takes much longer.
Small repairs found on the day are quoted separately first, and there are no hidden charges.
